State Film Archive

THE STATE FILM ARCHIVE OF THE REPUBLIC OF AZERBAIJAN

Created based on a government directive dated December 22, 1993, under the "Azərkinovideo" Production Union, the State Film Archive of the Republic of Azerbaijan has been active since 1994.

In the administrative building, there are specialized rooms equipped with technical tools, a laboratory, a 108-seat hall, and auxiliary rooms. There is also a room with modern cinema projection, sound equipment, and acoustic systems for film commission reviews. The 3rd and 4th floors of the archive building consist of cold storage for various types of cinema materials.

Since 1999, the state film archive has been a member of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and operates according to global standards

The film archive works on film restoration, preservation, and promoting cinema arts. It also conducts research, holds documents, and safeguards materials, including over 64,000 film units, nearly 20,000 photos, and over 14,000 original documents. Notably, rare footage from Azerbaijan's earliest films, like "Bibiheybətdə neft fontanı yanğını" and "Balaxanıda neft fontanı" from 1898, are archived here. The film archive publishes books about the films it preserves, following FIAF guidelines.

The structure as a research center has been expanding its activities over the years.

Various publications about Azerbaijani film history are prepared here. An example is the catalog of films published in Azerbaijani, Russian, and English, along with an electronic version. This catalog will allow many countries to become the audience of our films. Through research, the negatives and positives of photographs from notable artists such as composers Gara Garaev, Fikrat Amirov, Niyazi, Tofik Guliev, and Muslim Magomaev have been acquired from Russia, Canada, Georgia, and other countries. Among interesting archival documents are duplicates of documents from Ukraine's Simferopol archive, including those of Azerbaijan's first film actor, Kheyri Amirzada, and photographs of our first film actress from the USA, Izzət Orucova, as well as documents related to the production of the poetic film "Sevil" (1929). Through these searches, several lost rare silent Azerbaijani films have been discovered, including "Əvəz-əvəzə" (1925), "Vulkan üzərində ev" (1928, where actor Alasgar Alakbarov made his debut), "İki yoldaş" (1934), "Dəcəl dəstə" (1937, co-founded by Gamar Salamzada, the first Azerbaijani female film director in the East), and more. Additionally, fragments of the film "Hazır ol" (1939) by director Mikail Mikailov, which is considered lost today, and a small but valuable film reel depicting women's fads of the late 19th century, captured by the "Pathe" company in the early 20th century, have been found. A film showcasing the famous "Yablochko" dance by the Nikitchenko brothers in 1946, filmed using a complex technique, has also been discovered and handed over to the state film archive.

Today the archive holds over 12,000 photos related to film history and images of films produced worldwide. In late 2009, with the support of the H. Aliyev Foundation, the Children's Film House was opened for the first time in our country.

The archive contains originals and copies of around 11,100 Azerbaijani and international films. Among them are significant works like "Qız qalası" (1924), "Bismillah" (1925), "Sevil" (1929), "Lətif" (1930), "İsmət" (1934), "Mavi dənizin sahilində" (1935), "Almaz" (1936), "Bakılılar" (1938), "Kəndlilər" (1939), "Səbuhi" (1941), "Arşın mal alan" (1945 and 1965), "Fətəli xan" (1947), "Bakının işıqları" (1950), "Bəxtiyar" (1955), "O olmasın, bu olsun" (1956), and more. The collection includes various types of films, documents related to filmmakers, their manuscripts, documents and materials related to film production, scripts, director's notes, diplomas, and awards.
